The Lewis and Clark Expedition encountered 178 new plants and 122 species and subspecies of animals. They [almost always, Lewis] "collected" them. Lewis did make notes about the specimens but the analyses and detailed scientific descriptions of the specimens were done by others. It was, for instance, Frederick Pursh, who Lewis hired in Philadelphia to review the plant collection and describe and publish the results which Pursh did in 1818. Lewis described and published none of the plants he collected.
